But Are you using your AV receiver to its full potential?
If correctly tuned up it can give you optimum audio output that you deserve from the device.
Welcome to another Tiptuesday blog post and today we are sharing some tips on how to properly set up and connect your AV receiver for better audio quality.
To acheive the above mentioned purpose, in this article we share some practical tips which you can apply independent of the respective receiver model.
Tip 1: Correct wiring
Thanks to the high-resolution multimedia interface HDMI, audio and video data can be transmitted simultaneously via a cable of the same name.
In practice, satellite receivers, Blu-ray players and game consoles should be connected directly to the HDMI inputs of the home theater amplifier.
An autonomous audio connection via digital cable from the Blu-ray player to the amplifier is therefore not required. The TV or projector is connected directly to the HDMI output of the AV receiver. If you set the input from DVD to Sat with source selection, the picture and sound are switched together.
If you use the internal satellite or cable receiver of your TV, you can use the audio return channel (ARC) to feed the TV sound to the amplifier. Again, eliminating the annoying misplacement of another audio cable.
Attention: On most televisions, only the HDMI jacks marked with ARC can output a digital audio signal.

Tip 2: Fixed contacts
The best hardware is of little use if the signals are not transmitted properly. While the usual connectors such as HDMI, Toslink, and RCA ensure the accuracy of fit, special attention should be given to the assembly of loose speaker cables. Instead of twisting the exposed wires and squeezing them into the screw terminals of the amplifier, you should use banana plugs, lugs, or pins.
Extra tip: Use gloves for finishing so that no grease and dirt film gets on the copper wires. This would affect the contact resistance and thus the signal transmission.
Tip 3: Keep track
So you do not lose the overview between the numerous audio and video cables, it is advisable to label the individual lines.
For example, the loudspeaker cables can be marked with long adhesive stickers so that they can later be unambiguously assigned to a surround sound position.
Tip 4: Expand music selection
Modern AV receivers provide access to Internet radio stations and music services. The choice is so great that there is always something for every taste and every mood. The only requirement for the reception is that the home cinema amplifier is connected to the home network and therefore Internet.
Tip 5: Short Cable Routes
The optimal location for a home theater amplifier is near a TV, Blu-ray player and satellite receiver. This saves long cable runs between the source and playback devices.
Tip 6: Sufficient cooling
Dangerous jamming heat is generated during operation of an AV Receiver. In modern devices are added with a protective circuit, which prevents permanent damage to the sensitive components. To ensure adequate cooling, the amplifier should have enough air on all sides.
When installing in a closed cabinet with doors, attention must be paid to sufficient amplifier ventilation. If there are no openings, even drilled ventilation holes can provide the necessary heat dissipation. The more and bigger, the better.
Tip 7: Improve Dynamics
Caution is advised in effect programs that affect dynamics. These reduce the volume range to compensate for large loudness differences within a music or movie sound signal. Only the native surround sound formats without added effects programs offer a maximum dynamic range and thus unadulterated sound.
Depending on the size of the connected speaker set, different crossover frequencies are recommended for the acoustic transition between subwoofer and satellite. The rule of thumb is: The larger the front speakers, the lower the crossover frequency. If you have problems with low-frequency playback, you should change the subwoofer position and increase the crossover frequency of the bass speaker a little bit.
Tip 8: Optimize surround sound
Only when an AV receiver is tuned properly can it get the best possible sound quality from a speaker set. For optimal playback, front, center, effect and woofer speakers must be perfectly matched. If you have an amplifier with an automatic calibration function, you should try it first.
The optimal parameters for volume, tonality and time offset are automatically determined by the amplifier and measuring microphone. If you want to do the measurement yourself, you can use the level meter and the meter gauge. In doing so, you should carefully measure the distances between listening position and speakers as well as the level ratio of the speakers among each other, so that you get optimal surround sound.
